“Plant a Row” and Help Feed the Hungry
There comes a time when a great idea coincides with great opportunity to participate in a hands-on way. “Plant a Row” is an idea that encourages people to plant a veggie garden and donate a small portion of their harvest to a hungry neighbor. Plant a Row was conceived 10 years ago by the Garden Writers Association as a way to get garden centers and their customers to work together to form a network of small individual and community gardens to donate a “Row” to help the hungry.
Urban Organics/Sweet Peet will be coordinating a network of food banks that will receive the harvest as it comes in and then distribute it throughout their community. In hand with this effort, a network of supportive garden centers is forming and they will act as “drop-off” points for the harvest as it comes in from hopefully hundreds of small gardens. The garden centers will also provide the veggie plants and Sweet Peet plus a healthy dose of knowledge to help the gardeners be successful.
This is a great family or group activity and a tangible way to relax and work the earth. In these uncertain times, gardening is a natural antidote to the media doom and gloom negativity.
