Help Lower Cleveland’s Carbon Footprint by Volunteering to Install CFL’s in the Cleveland EcoVillage Neighborhood

CFLDevelopment Organization (DSCDO) and Slavic Village Community Development Corporation in Cleveland nearly 8,000 compact flourescent light bulbs (CFLs) to install in residents homes and apartments to help lower electricity costs and reduce the area’s carbon footprint.

The DSCDO is looking for volunteers to help install the CFLs in homes and apartments throughout the Cleveland EcoVillage—a sustainable neighborhood on the near West Side in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood. The bulbs are free of charge to neighborhood residents and each household can receive up to 12 bulbs.

Volunteer installation days will be held on weekday evenings and weekends in February and March. Volunteers will undergo a brief training session on CFL safety and energy conservation, form teams and be asked to install the bulbs as well as educate participants on simple resource conservation tips.

Overall, nearly 4000 CFLs will be installed in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood through a variety of programs. Through this voluntary program DSCDO hopes to install 1,200 CFLs into about 120 homes. Each household is expected to save approximately $185 annually on its utility bills. Households will be asked to participate in a voluntary follow-up utility bill study to measure the actual reduction in energy costs and carbon emissions.
