Tremont Farmers’ Market—It doesn’t get more local!
Nestled on a cozy triangular lot across from Lucky’s Café, the Tremont Farmers’ Market is a unique happening. For the past two years, urban farmers and artisans have come together to sell their goods at the corner of Starkweather and Professor. With farmers’ markets popping up all over Northeast Ohio, you might be wondering what could make this market special. Well, just about all of the vendors hail from Cleveland and do most of their growing here. As members of a movement to sustainably grow food and be actively involved in the life of a city, these growers choose to be in Cleveland for many reasons.
Eating locally grown food gives consumers the opportunity to enjoy the tastiest, most nutritious produce. Choosing locally grown food also conserves fuel and energy involved in transporting and processing food grown many miles away. Keeping dollars circulating regionally is also a benefit. You can do your part to support local growers by shopping at area farmers’ markets.
Stop by the Tremont Farmers’ Market between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. beginning Sunday, June 22. Music, chef demonstrations and health-related activities are scheduled throughout the season. The following vendors will be part of this year’s market:
Gather ‘round Farm
Meagan Kresge and Jocelyn Kirkwood work the asphalt at Gather-Round Farm, a permaculture garden on a former parking lot on Lorain Avenue in Cleveland’s near West Side. The garden serves as a market garden and an educational site with examples of backyard sustainability practices, such as run-off filtration and management, rain water collection and use, beneficial native plants, and permaculture design techniques to create wildlife habitats and sustainable food supply for Cleveland area. This year they will be selling cut flowers, vegetables and fresh eggs.
Plant Ally Herbs
These local herbalists sell homemade (and time tested) herbal preparations for maintaining your health and helping your body cope with illness. All preparations are made in Cleveland. Come try their teas, or address your physical ailments with more “advanced” remedies.
