Join the Ohio Student Environmental Coalition and Help Create a Clean, Safe and Just Future for All
The Ohio Student Environmental Coalition was formed in November at Power Shift 2007, a national youth summit, to address the climate crisis in Washington D.C. It was the largest gathering of Ohio student environmental activists in more than 10 years, and it wasn’t even in Ohio.
Since then, we organized our first state conference in February, hosted Mountain Justice Spring Break last March in Southeast Ohio, and most recently held our second annual state conference in September, where we pumped up the rally for green jobs which was featured in the October/November issue of EarthWatch Ohio. Our top priorities are to stop the proposed AMP-Ohio coal-fired power plant in southeast Ohio, promote the development of green-collar jobs, pressure politicians to take bold actions on climate change and support local efforts on campuses around the state.
Now, a year after Power Shift 2007, we are growing in new and exciting ways. We formed a steering committee of student leaders and committed alumni, and recently had our first meeting where we set the coalition’s priorities and action plans, focusing specifically on campaign strategy, facilitating good communication and supporting the youth movement for sustainability.
Steering members represent their local groups and work in committees that focus on trainings, work with media and campaigns. Participants gain experience, formal training, an opportunity to make their voices heard in a strong and growing statewide organization and new friends all over the state. If you’re a young person working for sustainability on or off campus, you should check us out.
The Ohio Student Environmental Coalition is a statewide network of student groups working for a clean, safe, and just future for all.
