Deconstruction in Tremont

DeconstructionThanks to Mitch Paul, from Shaker Cycle at Jefferson and West 5th Street, for alerting me to the deconstruction of a house about 200 yards from EcoWatch's new office on Literary Road in Tremont, a near westside Cleveland neighborhood.

Urban Lumberjacks Of Cleveland (ULOC) spent seven days in deconstructing the two-story house, at 506 Literary Rd. ULOC is dedicated to deconstructing houses in Cleveland to rescue great 'old growth' lumber. ULOC is on the forefront of the deconstruction industry in Northeast Ohio by building the contractor base, marketing channels and necessary partnerships to make deconstruction happen at a large scale.

The crew hired to work on the deconstruction project graduated from Cuyahoga Community College's Green Academy and Center for Sustainability training program. Deconstruction is a green job generator and helps to create a sustainable region.

"The Tremont deconstruction project is an excellent example that shows how the City of Cleveland is committed to improving the quality of life for a neighborhood by removing a condemned home and environment by electing to invest in having the structure recycled," said Chris Kious, ULOC president.

DeconstructionBoards

The wood rescued from the Tremont house is being transformed into products made by APOC—A Piece Of Cleveland, a local company dedicated to designing and constructing quality furnishings and accessories out of materials reclaimed from deconstructed buildings in the Cleveland area. They work to preserve the history of these buildings by salvaging constructed materials and turning these resources back into functional products.

At the Banyan Tree, 2242 Professor Ave., up the street from the deconstructed house, people can purchase cutting boards made of materials from the deconstruction. Seems like a great holiday gift.
