In October, the Cleveland Climate Watch took its Cleveland Mountain Justice Project to the shores of Lake Erie, as part of the 350.org's International Day of Climate Action. The target for the action was the Avon Lake Power Plant owned by Houston-based RRI Energy.
The project's goal is to stop Northeast Ohio generating facilities from using mountain top removal (MTR) coal. The action was held to raise awareness that the Avon Lake plant burns MTR coal as stated on the www.ilovemountains.org website and in federal regulatory reports. The campaign was launched this summer with an appeal to local residents to send emails to Houston-based RRI, urging it to stop using MTR coal in Avon Lake and the rest of its plants.
More than 50 people met on the shore of Lake Erie, with an extended picket line that stretched down Lake Avenue holding signs that read Turn on Your Lights, Blow Up a Mountain to signs made by children telling passing motorists that they want a future too. Then the group assembled on the fishing pier with the plant in the background for a group shot to send to 350.org where it was shown on one of the screens in Times Square.
